Turtle Tank Setup: Water, Basking and Filtration
Turtles are messy swimmers that need dry heat too. Here is how to build for both.
Aquatic turtles need a proper swimming volume, a dry basking platform and far more filtration than fish of the same size. Skimp on any one and water quality collapses.
Size the tank to the adult
The usual rule is 40 litres of water per 2.5 cm of shell length. A red-eared slider that reaches 25 cm therefore needs around 400 litres — plan for the adult, not the hatchling in the shop.
Basking is not optional
- A dry platform the turtle can climb onto and fully leave the water.
- Basking surface temperature around 32–35°C; water around 24–27°C.
- UVB across the basking area, replaced every 6–12 months even if still lit.
Over-filter, always
Turtles produce a lot of waste. Use a canister filter rated for at least twice the tank volume, and feed in a separate tub if you can — it keeps most of the mess out of the main tank entirely.
Water changes
Change 25–50% weekly and dechlorinate. Cloudy water or a strong smell means the filter is undersized or the turtle is being overfed.
Substrate
Bare bottom or large river stones only. Gravel small enough to swallow causes impaction.
